A misty apple orchard in Asturias with green fruit and long wet grass

Stop 02Asturias, Spain — In development

Asturias

Next stop: Asturias.

The green north — and home. Cider apples, low cloud on the hills, cliffs dropping into the Cantabrian sea, and grass that never quite dries.

Why this stop exists

Asturias is where I am from. The sea on one side, the mountains on the other, and between them orchards, wet grass and apples on the ground. This stop is the one I did not have to travel to imagine — I only had to open a window.

Green apples hanging in a misty orchard

Chapter One

Under the trees

Old trees, planted close, branches low enough to reach. Fruit on the ground going soft, fruit above still hard and green. The air is cool and full of water.

Rain falling on wet orchard leaves and long grass

Chapter Two

Rain through the leaves

It rains without announcing itself. Leaves darken, grass flattens, and the whole orchard smells briefly of stone and sap. Then it stops, and the light comes back thin and silver.

Green cliffs and sea mist along the Asturian coast

Chapter Three

The sea behind the hill

Walk twenty minutes and the meadow simply ends in a cliff. Salt joins the grass, the wind changes register, and the green smells colder than it did among the trees.

From place to fragrance

How this destination became a scent

Everything here is filtered through water. Apple skin is sharper in the damp, grass smells cut even when it isn't, and the woods hold rain for hours — so the fragrance leans green and cool rather than sweet.

Mid-morning, just after the rain has passed through.
